F&B and I are home alone today since Shaun had to work and took my car in the process, so why not do bentos and have an indoor picnic? It's Dallas in June, and outdoor picnic would be torture for me. I'm Canadian, it's too hot here.
One of the questions I have gotten repeated is whether or not the "cutesy" stuff is time consuming. It can be, if you want it to, but it doesn't have to be complicated. We tried cute but simple today with our lunches, and no tools but a knife (other than the bears on Faith's salad, they were for something else I'm doing, so I stuck them in the bento when I finished with them).
Faith has a grilled cheese sandwich--extra sharp old cheddar with sliced anjou pears on Nature's Own 100% Whole Wheat sandwich rounds. These are sooooooo good, I love pear with cheese. The face on the sandwich is a slice of baby carrot cut in half for the eyes with sliver of cucumber peel for the pupils, another half a slice of baby carrot for the nose, and a slice of strawberry for the smile. Underneath that, she has a small salad--lettuce, carrot rounds, and a couple of cucumber bears. The bears are just a cookie cutter I have that also has notches on the sides for the eyes/nose/mouth. Quick to make with the cutter, but probably not with the knife. The top right holds vanilla yogurt with blueberry eyes & nose and a strawberry slice mouth. The bottom right is slices of green apple & whole strawberries. She had a separate container with dressing for the salad.
Ben's is almost the same, but he had extra blackberries and carrots stick & celery with ranch in lieu of a salad. Again, all the decorations are knife cut and probably only took an extra minute to add in.
Both lunches are packed our EasyLunchboxes. The sandwich rounds fit better in this box and I liked the separate compartment for the yogurt. Although we rarely use plastic wrap, I've been told that if you cover the yogurt container with a bit before you put the lid on, it will keep it from getting the rest of the lunch messy.
