Veggie "Sushi" Bento for Faith

Just hanging out today, trying to decide what to do on Labor Day weekend. We thought of going to the science museum today, but there is some interesting stuff going on this weekend, so maybe tomorrow? Our passes are good till the end of September, thankfully, so I want to go one more time to the Dallas museum and still try to make it over to Fort Worth once.

Since we didn't truly need a to-go lunch today, I decided to play around a little bit. I saw a veggie style fake sushi on a blog the other day, so decided to try it for Faith--Nature's Own Honey 7 Grain bread, flattened, cream cheese, thin slices of carrot, celery, and cucumber, rolled up and sliced into rolls. It's kind of cute!

Miss Faith has some of the veggie sushi rolls, a stuffed muffin, topped with a little cheese puppy, cantaloupe & honeydew, and a homemade peach-apple fruit roll up.

For my Dallas readers, the MDA telethon in on NBC5 on Monday, Faith's segment will show at 9:40 in the morning if you'd like to see my little diva on tv! Hoping they will post the segments somewhere online for everyone else. If you happen to know how to record from tv to the computer to upload, let me know? My parents are in Canada and they'd like to see it too. :o)

  1. Fun 'sushi' rollups! I bet my stepdaughter would like these. :) She's a fiend for sushi and easily breaks the bank when we go out for it. This would be a fun way to have affordable sushi. :)

  2. This website should not be promoted as adequate for older kids. Eating disorders are rampant in our teenagers. Please make it clear that this is for younger children, and that these portions are totally inadequate for active teenage diets. In fact, these portions are only adequate for very, very young children.

  3. Aw, cute, I do the same thing with tortillas and lunchmeat and cheese for my boyfriend. He doesn't like sushi. =/

  4. Hi Anonymous, this website isn't promoted as a website for teens. Shannon's kids are 7 and 4 years old.

  5. To Anonymous: Teenagers with eating disorders are not going to check a blog about eating anything, and they certainly will not put forth the effort to create a bento box no matter how much or how little food is included. They are busy trying to survive by eating gum for breakfast. You are correct in that it is a problem, but this blog is not the cause and it certainly isn't going to make it worse.

What this blog DOES do is allow parents and caregivers to help their little ones have a healthy appreciation of good, wholesome food from a young age. If anything, this blog probably helps stop the epidemic, IMHO.

Shannon, you have a wonderful blog that I check every day for ideas for my preschooler's lunch. Thank you for all of your hard work!

  6. I agree with pp, this blog promotes healthy, varied foods in a fun way for young children. I don't know any teens that would ask for or approve of "character" sandwiches, lots of fruits & veg in mini bites etc.

  7. I smell a troll. Congratulations Shannon! :)

  8. Dear Anonymous,

What part of "From Kindergarten onward" did you misinterpret? I may not have my pulse on what's popular for teens but I'm betting that lumping them in with five year olds is not high on their list of cool things.

  9. Thanks anonymous-that was a good laugh this afternoon :)

  10. To Annon,
What teenager would take a plastic kitty box to school for lunch with shaped sandwiches, cheese flowers, kitty eggs and cute picks for fruit? Come to think of it, not many teenagers take lunch to school. OBVIOUSLY, this is not geared toward teenagers.

When I make my nine year old a bento filled with many of Shannon's ideas and few of my own, she actually eats better.

  11. @Anonymous:

First of all, Shannon is merely promoting the general idea of "bento," and how it can help picky eaters of any age to eat a balanced meal. This is not a blog about eating disorders; and as Rachel stated, the chances of an individual with an eating disorder viewing a blog like this would be slim to none.

And you are correct that the portions pictured are only appropriate for very young children - afterall, that description does fit Shannon's children. She has young children, so therefore the portions are much smaller than what you or I would have.

  12. If you read about the author, it specifically says how old the children are. Honestly.

  13. Such a cute lunch! I love the cheese puppy and the "baby sushi."

  14. Veggie sushi looks delicious, and love the cute little puppy!!

  15. Did you just freehand the puppy ears? Very cute!

  16. @Stefanie No, I took the same cutter and bumped it up to the edge of the cheese so the ear groove lined up with the edge. I can't cut things that perfectly without a lot of help. ;o)

  17. Do you have recipes for things like the Sushi rolls?

  18. I saw these on a blog somewhere, but don't remember where exactly. :o( Basically, I trimmed the crusts from a slice of bread (I used Nature's Own Honey 7-Grain) and flattened it with a rolling pin. I spread it with a bit of cream cheese, just a thin layer but covering the bread, then lined up really long, thin slices of carrot/celery/cucumber at one end and rolled it tightly up. I used a sharper bread knife (serrated) to slice it into rounds. Hope that helps a bit!
