Hormel January - Superbowl Time!

The Superbowl is this weekend and it's time to start planning the menu, I think!

OK, I'll be honest, we're more likely to spend Superbowl Sunday skiing at Keystone than actually watching the Superbowl, but that doesn't mean planning yummy themed food can't be fun.  Our teams have long been out (Buffalo for me, Dallas for the husband), so we're sort of routing for San Franscisco, which is more of a not cheering for Baltimore plan.

What kind of Superbowl food is a must have for you?  Hormel has plenty of options for a traditional game menu and for a New Orleans themed one.

For a great Cajun themed party, consider:

  • Easy Cajun Jambalaya: Spice things up in under 30 minutes with this New Orleans favorite that will bring you to Bourbon Street in just one bite.
  • Smoked Ham Cajun Po-Boy: Combine warm French baguettes, Hormel ®Natural Choice® smoked deli ham and Cajun seasoning for the perfect Po-Boy.
  • Cajun Fries: Pair these with your favorite grilled entree for a complete meal that will keep you satisfied well past fourth quarter.
Just want the traditional fare? What about:

  • Pizza: Go for the traditional and pick up Hormel® pepperoni or pizza toppings or try out this Bacon and Caramelized Onion recipe featuring Hormel® fully cooked bacon
  • Snacks: All the essentials in one ready-to-go Football themed party tray – enough said.
  • Wings: No other chicken wings are even in the same league as these Championship Chicken Wings, featuring CHI-CHI’S® smooth & spicy picante sauce. Or let the barbeque sauce do the talking with Lloyd’s wide variety of shredded meats and ribs products.
  •  Dips: Hormel Foods has a variety of pre-made foods that are chip-friendly including: Wholly Guacamole®, Hormel® chili and CHI-CHI’S® salsa and queso.
What about your house?  Any tried and true Game Day recipes?  We're always looking for yummy new ideas!

Disclosure: I have received product and information from Hormel Foods in exchange for being a Hormel Foods Extended Family Blogger. All opinions expressed within the post are my own.

A Lunchable-Style Bento for Faith

As frequently mentioned, F&B love the concept of Lunchables, but are not big fans of the flavor, or the fact that they really don't have enough food for them. So once again, we made our own, with a lot more food.

Faith has rolled black pepper turkey, slices of sharp orange cheddar and mild white cheddar, Van's new gluten free cheese crackers, a cutie orange, carrot sticks and some vanilla yogurt.  A little healthier, a lot more food, and she's quite happy!  It's packed in our Easy Lunchboxes (also available on Amazon).

Almost Back to Normal Bento

We're slowly, but surely, getting back to healthy around here. Essentially, everyone had a really really bad cold, except the husband, which involved too much coughing and a lot of general fatigue. Ben was ready for school on Thursday, then Faith went back on Friday. We did go to the doctor who told us we'd be looking at a couple weeks to get rid of the coughs, but that no one was contagious, so school it is!

Ben had two fish shaped sandwiches, cut with a LunchPunch and decorated with a bit of cheese and sugar eyes.  To go with that he had carrots, strawberries, and a cutie orange, along with a not-pictured container of yogurt.   It's packed in our Easy Lunchboxes (also available on Amazon).

Another Lunch Bento to Feed the Husband

It's still pretty rare that the husband needs to bring lunch to work instead of eating at home, but it does happen once in awhile.  Since I never know when it will occur, he often gets whatever foods I happen to have around the kitchen, but I do take pictures since they are still kind of blog-worthy.

This time, for lunch, he has a black pepper turkey sandwich with swiss cheese, lettuce, mayo, etc, on multigrain sandwich rounds.  He generally prefers sub sandwich type bread, but I didn't have any, so rounds it is.  For side dishes, he has broccoli salad with bacon, black cherries and a cutie orange.   It's packed in our Easy Lunchboxes (also available on Amazon).

Quick Bento Lunches for Sick Mommy Days

Despite the fact that I have the plague (really, the cold from Hades, since last Sunday), the munchkins seem to still require food at regularly scheduled intervals. While aggravating, I suppose I am expected to feed them, and they are quite vocal when meals are late.  Goldfish bread might be one of my favorite items for these kinds of weeks.  Cute lunch with *NO* effort whatsoever, just add a sugar eye to the fishie bread and you've got an adorable sandwich right there.  Some pretty fruits for color, maybe a side of yogurt and it's a balanced lunch too.

Ben has turkey and cheese sandwich on the honey wheat Goldfish bread, along with blackberries, a kiwi, and a cutie orange.  He also took a container of Chobani Champions Orange Vanilla Yogurt on the side, his favorite kind.  It's packed in our Easy Lunchboxes (also available on Amazon).

Another New Yubo Box & Bento, for my girl

Despite ordering the Yubos for both kids on the same day, Faith's arrived the day after Ben's, much to her chagrin, and I had already had lunches made by the time it showed up at our door last Thursday, so it had to wait till this week.  As soon as she saw the container, she said "You know what would be perfect in here?  A big salad!"  Hard to argue with a kid who wants a big salad for lunch.

Faith had her salad--lettuce, cucumber, carrots, shredded cheese, some ham rolls, and boiled egg slices in the main container of the Yubo.  I used an EasyLunchboxes Mini Dipper to hold some French dressing for her, which fit perfectly in the container.  In the smaller containers, she had a mini cupcake and vanilla yogurt with a few sprinkles, then took a Cutie orange for a snack.  She is loving the container, so now we just need to get some of the interchangeable plates for the front and back.  I had gotten great deals on the Firetruck and Fairy Yubos, but the kids like a few of the other patterns to, so that's next on my purchase list.

A Bento in Our New Yubo Box!

So I've been kind of wanting a Yubo Box to play with, but as you all know I technically need more boxes like I need more holes in the head. However, when a good sale popped up, and a friend had an extra first-time buyer at the site coupon, I decided to make the dream a reality.

I actually purchased two, but for some reason, they shipped separately, so only Ben's was here for this morning. Of course, he wanted to use it and Faith thought I should wait till they both had their boxes in. And I wanted to play with it, so I won.

Ben has a cream cheese and cantaloupe jam sandwich on multigrain rounds, topped with his name in cheddar letters.  (I was going to go with a theme, but I'm reorganizing kitchen cabinets and the cookie cutter cabinet is blocked with boxes.)  He had some cutie orange slices with blueberries in the center, and some veggie straws.  What I loved about the Yubo is the separate tight-seal containers to the right hand side.  In one, he has vanilla yogurt with sprinkles, and in the other, he has frozen blackberries (which will thaw by lunch).  In the back, you can kind of see the built in ice pack which all the containers sit on, so no worries about fitting proper icepacks in containers either!

Because they were sale priced, I didn't have an option to choose another pattern, but Ben did like the firedog (he likes dogs).  I may look into ordering a few other faceplates for the box, just so he can alternate, since they are interchangeable.

Simple Freezer Stash Bento

School day two, and it's still quite peaceful at my house.

Today's lunch is nothing extraordinary, but does show how a nice box, neat stacks and colorful food can really make a boring lunch less blah.  I pulled the muffins and the blackberries from my freezer stash, so not only is it simple, it's quick too!

Ben has a corndog muffin, accented with an elephant pick for his entree, along with some pretzels and a few leftover M&Ms for a treat (the absence of red and green M&Ms are due to Christmas baking).  The bottom holds a cute orange and some frozen blackberries, along with a small elephant fork-pick.  Since the blackberries will thaw by lunch, I thought the boy might appreciate a way of eating them without getting juice on his hands.  It's packed in a 4-square Lock&Lock container, which is still a favorite of mine after all these years.

I'd highly recommend a freezer stash for lunches--freeze berries when they are at their best and on sale (these blackberries were $1/clamshell), make & freeze stuffed muffins for quick entrees, along with mini sweet muffins for desserts.  You can theoretically pull the entire lunch from the freezer with no prep work that morning!

Back to School and an Astronaut Bento!

And we are officially back to school!  F&B headed off this morning and I am currently enjoying the silence, except for the puppy chasing his food ball around the living room.

Ben and I headed to Target yesterday and found the most awesome astronaut picks in the Christmas clearance section!  They were intended as cheese picks and the little flags can be written on with a marker (included in the packet).  They were originally $12, but for 90% off?  We came home with a set of six--two red, two grey-blue, two blue.  Of course, that meant astronaut themed bento today.

Ben has peppered turkey and cheese on honey wheat, cut with a FunBites Cube-It, and skewered on the astronaut picks.  For reference, this is about 2/3 of a sandwich, since it looks minuscule when presented this way.  He's been wanting more smaller/half sandwiches lately, and extra sides.  Today's sides include a kiwi, a cutie orange, and some blackberries.  Not pictured, he had Chobani Champions Honey-Nana Greek yogurt and an oatmeal Kids Clif bar.  It's packed in our Easy Lunchboxes (also available on Amazon).

Top 10 Bento Posts of 2012

I did this last year and loved looking to see what posts were popular on the blog.  Of course, with a 5 year old blog, they weren't all posts from that given year.  Some old posts have resurfaced (thanks to Pinterest especially) which is always nice to see, since a few of those are my favorites as well.

On top the top 10!

#1 - The Cutest Easter Eggs Ever - a preschool bento of Ben's from March 2010

#2 - The Kids Cook Monday: Macaroni and Cheese Muffins - This was #1 last year and still a really popular post.

#3 - Bento Desserts Part 4: Homemade Granola Bars - Another older post that has gone up quite a bit in the rankings, and it is an awesome granola bar recipe.  It's also safe for schools with no PB whatsoever!

#4 - Yo Ho Yo Ho, A Pirate Bento for Ben - This is one of my all time favorite bentos ever, and who doesn't like pirates?  I've replicated it too, for Ben and for Disney!

#5 - Freezer Meal Extravaganza: 14 Ready to Go Meals - Finally an actual post from 2012!  I got on a freezer cooking kick in August and a friend asked me to blog it so she could get a list of the recipes.  So I did!

#6 - Spaghetti & Meatball Cupcakes - Another yummy recipe and these are adorable too.  Noodles, some egg, parmesan, etc, make a baked spaghetti cupcake, topped with tomato sauce "icing" and a meatball for the cherry on top.

#7 - Feeding My Husband: Another Week, Another Lunch - I have no idea how or why this bento cracked the top 10. It's a kind of boring husband lunch--egg salad wrap, salad, fruits, etc, and a not-so-good picture.

#8 {tie} - 11 Zucchini Ideas from F&B's Taste-Tested Collection - A good compilation of some of the kids' favorite zucchini recipes, from side dishes to desserts!

#8 {tie} - Angry Birds Memorial Day Bento - Everyone loves Angry Birds, especially my boy!

#9 - The Kids Cook Monday: Ben's Taco Muffins - And yet another recipe, this time featuring my cute little guy making taco muffins for lunch entrees.  These are also great for using out leftover taco meat.

#10  - A Valentine's Bento, One Day Early - A cute VDay idea for the kids, with simple cutouts, carrot hearts, yogurt with sprinkles and fruits.

And with that, we'll see what next year brings us! I love seeing what posts get people's eyes.
