A New Take on Bento, the Muffin Tin Meal

Since we are home for the summer, the need to make bentos has been few & far between. It's hard to get on board with handwash-only items when we are eating at the kitchen table.

On my travels around the web, I did find a fun site that talked about Muffin Tin meals. It's similar to a bento concept, I suppose, but in muffin tins--one compartment per item. And muffin tins are dishwasher safe.

We've done it twice already, with themed meals!

Alphabet theme--Apricots, Bananas, Cheese, Donut, Egg, Fish

And a number theme--1 cupcake, 2 carrot sticks, 3 slices of turkey on kebab sticks, 4 pieces of cheese, 5 crackers, 6 chunks of canteloupe

Despite the fact that my children take bentos for school, they were thoroughly impressed by these.

ETA2: For my local friends, the muffin tins were from the Dollar Tree by my house, so now $4/tin at Target!

  1. I love muffin tin meals!!!!! We do these all the time since I started homeschooling and don't pack a lunch. Oddly enough I have started making more bento lunches since summer started since we have been so busy. I have yet to do a themed muffin tin meal however as I am just not that cool ;p

  4. The girl loved this when she was a toddler, but I wasn't cool enough to theme :) Oh - I bought those tins and they rusted. Bleh.

  5. What a fun idea. I've scoured our local St. Louis-area Dollar Trees for the muffin tins, but no dice. Next stop, Target.

We used to live near Chesapeake, VA, and it was Dollar Tree heaven. Dollar Tree is based out of Chesapeake.

  6. Oooh, where did you find the adorable Strawberry Shortcake picks!??

  7. The SS picks were actually from my daughter's birthday cake. I saved them figuring I'd use them again at some point. The cake itself was from the bakery at Kroger.

  8. Too bad we don't have that store around this area! Oh well! I'll check online.
