Feeding My Husband - Sushi Snack Bento

Shaun has been craving sushi lately, but our whole eat-at-home plan generally precludes sushi because we don't live in a Japanese restaurant. However, we do have a sushi making set and I've been debating trying it again.

Whilst at Kroger the other day, I noticed their sushi bar (yes, our grocery has a sushi bar) sells individual containers of wasabi, ginger, and spicy mayo. We bought the spicy mayo, some crab and an avocado. So today, I took the leftover rice, a bit of rice vinegar, some nori, and a pinch of sugar and got to work.

The result? Two full sort of California sushi rolls (8 large pieces each), for much less than buying 6 smaller pieces at the sushi bar. And I still have lots of crab leftover, plus half a container of spicy mayo and half an avocado, so we can make more later this week

Sushi Snack Bento Lunchbot Duo

Shaun was more than happy to grab a snack bento for work. It's packed in a Lunchbots Duo, to give you an idea of container/sushi size. To the left, there are 6 big pieces of my California roll. To the right, he has orange slices, cantaloupe, honeydew and strawberry pieces. Soy sauce is in a separate container for dipping.

  1. I love it! I made sushi rolls for the first time at home this week and I was thrilled with how easy and cheap it was!

  2. My hubby is a sushi-monster! I really need to make him some for lunch - I intended to a few weeks back but stuff happened and we ended up making it for dinner instead. Our grocery store has a sushi bar too! I should see if they have spicy mayo...:) Great bento as always!

  6. Good job! I have a sushi mold and have yet to use it (our grocery stores have sushi bars too, but then we live in Los Angeles. It's almost expected!)

Also? I love that you're the only other person I've seen (besides me) who uses the word "whilst"! Whoohoo!

  9. You can make your own spicy mayo by mixing Sriachi with mayo... not quite sure the brand of mayo that's best though - probably to taste. I LOVE the spicy mayo :) This looks yummy.
