The Kids Cook Monday - The Best Cookies Ever

Now that my parents have returned home, life as settled back to normal, so expect bentos and more this week! Today, however, it's time for The Kids Cook Monday, in which we made the best cookies ever.

Why are they the best cookies ever? Because they have anise in them which results in a lovely licorice taste. And I remember making them with my mom & grandma as a little girl, so it's extra awesome to see F&B making them with my mom. The best cookies ever are actually a Polish cookie called "Piednicki" which I can't swear I spelled right. They result in a great dough for cutout cookies, we made mostly Easter ones, with a few Star Wars ones mixed in for Mr. Ben

This would be a Yoda cookie, after icing and sprinkles.

And a sheet of Star Wars cookies, the cutters are from Williams Sonoma

A note about the recipe, you may want to *half* this, half batches make about 7 dozen, we make full batches for Christmas and can end up with anywhere from 14-18 dozen, depending on the size of the cookie cutters.

10 cups flour
4 cups sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 lb lard (this can't be shortening or butter)
5 eggs
1 cup sour cream
5 drops anise oil, minimum

Beat eggs with anise and sour cream
Mix together flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, then make a well in the middle.
Crumble lard, then add egg mixture and mix well till dough forms.

Roll out dough, and cut with cookie cutters.
Bake at 400 degrees for 10-15 minutes, till edges are lightly browned.

If desired, mix powdered sugar with boiling water to make a glaze, then add sprinkles!

It's been busy around here, so a quick synopsis of what else is going on:

This is one of my favorite crafts ever, made for my mom about 6 years ago, it hangs in her kitchen.

Out of curiosity why can't butter or shortening be substituted? I'd love to try these out but we are a no lard house lol
