5 Simple Sandwich Spins, Bento #1 - Sushi Rolls

I've had this series floating around in my head for awhile, so decide that this week, I'm finally going to write it!

The humble sandwich is still the main staple of the American elementary school lunchbox, but after awhile, two slices of bread, some meat/cheese or PB&J gets a little old. But what about a way to jazz up the sandwich? Or better yet, 5 simple ways?

That's what we're doing this week, 5 different sandwich options, all using a regular loaf of the same bread!

First up, of course, is the sushi sandwich. Our very first bento, way back in 2007, featured sushi sandwiches. These are great with meat and cheese, peanut butter and jelly or cream cheese and jelly, just as long as you have something to stick the last bit together. It helps to trim the very edges of the crusts first and then roll the bread flat with a rolling pin. Spread with fillings, leave a little bit empty at the one edge, then roll tightly and slice!

Faith has cream cheese and raspberry jam sushi sandwiches (side note: plain white or wheat bread works a lot better, but we like 12 grain bread). Side dishes include honeydew, carrots & ranch, and strawberry yogurt (a bit of press&seal made sure the yogurt stayed in place). It's packed today in a Lock & Lock 4 square box.

Tomorrow, another day, another lunch, and another sandwich bento! See you then!

  1. Such a fun idea! I know my daughter would like cream cheese and pepperoni on the whole grain bread.
