Mad Hatter Marshmallow Treats

One of my favorite movies as a kid was the original Disney animated Alice in Wonderland.  I still love it as an adult and was so excited with the chance to see the new Alice Through the Looking Glass, as a sneak preview with my kids on Monday.  Of course, a new movie calls for something fun for snacks, so we made Mad Hatter Marshmallow Treats.

As I prefer, they are fairly easy to make, using marshmallows and round crackers (or cookies) and melting chocolates.  I think they'd be absolutely adorable to make if you did a bunch of different color melting chocolates, but I only had pink on hand when I came up with the idea.

What You Need:
  • Marshmallows, regular size
  • Round butter crackers
  • Melting chocolate discs
  • Fruit by the Foot or similar fruit leather
How to Make:
  • Melt your chocolate per package directions, I usually microwave mine, stirring every little bit so it's nice and liquidy.
  • Skewer your marshmallows carefully on toothpicks and dip into the chocolate, coating the top and sides.  You can leave the bottom plain for now.  Set aside to harden.  I set mine chocolate top down to make a nice flat hat top.

  • Carefully dip your crackers into the chocolate too, set those aside to harden too.  I didn't worry about the bottom of those either.
  • Once your hat top and base have hardened, melt a little more chocolate.  Spread some on the plain part of the marshmallow and place it on top of the cracker to "glue" your hat together.
  • Separate your Fruit by the Foot into two colors and cut a piece that will wrap around the marshmallow to make a hatband.  Wrap it around the hat, trim the excess, and use a dot of melting chocolate or two to hold it in place.

  • If you have small cookie cutters, cut a tiny flower or star from the other color fruit strip and tuck into the hatband for a decoration.  If you don't have a small shape, use a small square like the Mad Hatter has on his!
  • Set aside to harden, then serve!

Are you excited for Alice Through the Looking Glass? It premieres today and we really recommend it! The movie is an all-new spectacular adventure featuring the unforgettable characters from Lewis Carroll’s beloved stories.

Alice returns to the whimsical world of Underland and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter.  The favorite characters from the first movie are joined by new ones, the Mad Hatter's father, Zanik Hightopp, and Time himself, a creature who is part man, part clock!

To get you even more in the mood for the movie, we have a few fun things you can print.  The coloring sheets are beautiful.

Or check out one of my favorite parts of the movie, when Alice meets young Hatter!

And the kids and I are really loving this part, I'm changing my FB profile picture to me as the Queen of Hearts:

Who would you pick to be?  And if you've seen the movie, what did you think of it?
